The reason that the Tab Ultra is so versatile is that it runs Android 11 and you can install additional apps from the Google Play Store. There is also a standard folio available (without a keyboard) but ideally, you do need one of them because the camera protrudes a few millimetres from the rear panel, so without a folio, the Tab Ultra will not lay flat.

The keyboard is one of the reasons that I use the Boox Tab Ultra so frequently because it is fantastic for typing out documents…in fact, I’m typing this article out on my Tab Ultra right now! Although it is possible to connect Bluetooth keyboards to other devices, only the Tab Ultra and, more recently, the reMarkable 2 (see below) that have a dedicated peripheral. The Boox Tab Ultra also has a plethora of hardware features that include onboard speakers, microphone, 16Mp camera, g-sensor (for auto-orientation between landscape and portrait) and an optional magnetic keyboard folio attachment. There is a frontlight for viewing in dark/dim conditions, along with options to adjust the warm light to give the screen a softer red tone. The glass screen is a 10.3″ (around A5-sized) Carta HD enclosed within a metal chassis. It comes with a colossal 128Gb of storage capacity, with around 105Gb available for your files and has a MicroSD card slot to increase space even further. Hardware specsīoox devices have the highest-spec hardware of all e-ink tablets and their newest product range, including the Tab Ultra and the Tab X (see below) is no exception.įor the techies, it has a 1.8GHz octa-core processor, a dedicated GPU, and 4Gb of RAM, which means that it runs fast and multitasks efficiently. The great things about the Boox Tab Ultra are its power and versatility. Please note that all colour e-ink screens (including the Tab Ultra C) are not as vibrant as their LCD/OLED counterparts – they look quite washed out (soft and pastel are some of the marketing terms used by e-ink manufacturers). The difference between the two is that the Tab Ultra is monochrome and Tab Ultra C has a colour screen and higher resolution but costs a little more.

The Boox Tab Ultra series consists of the Boox Tab Ultra and the Boox Tab Ultra C.

ONYX BOOX TAB ULTRA SERIES (most like a regular laptop/tablet)Ī powerful and versatile e-ink tablet that is as close as you can get to a regular tablet/laptop. The main drawback is that they have a low refresh rate, which means that although they are ideal for reading, writing, and sketching, they are not ideal for looking at things that are constantly moving, such as games or videos (although Boox’s Tab line of products are closing the divide). And they consume very little power, so can last for weeks without needing a recharge. Moreover, they don’t emit light, so they can be more comfortable for the eyes and can be viewed clearly outside, even on sunny days. This is the same technology used on Amazon Kindle screens, and it looks and feels like real paper (or as close as you can get from a digital device). They differ from LCD and OLED devices such as Apple’s iPad because they use an E-ink display. What is an E-Ink Writing Tablet?Į-ink tablets (also known as eNotes and ePaper) are electronic tablets that can be used for writing and sketching and are often used as a replacement for traditional notepads and sketchbooks. To help your decision-making, I’ve built some tools for searching and comparing e-ink tablets that you may find useful. Depending on your own requirements, any of these five devices would be a good investment. I think every single device listed on this page is awesome, but for very different reasons – it was very difficult to rank them (and I very often changed my mind) but in the end, I based it on which device I use the most or regularly reach for when I want to take some notes. Unlike other ‘ best e-ink tablet‘ webpages I’ve seen, I have actually bought, tested and regularly use the devices I review – here’s a picture of me with a selection of my tablets. In this article, I will list my top 5 e-ink writing tablets and explain the reasons why I love them.
